Easy-to-Clean Coatings: Self-cleaning and Water-repelling

GXC Coatings easy-to-clean and water-repelling coatings protect high-end parts made of glass, plastic or metal from dirt or facilitate the cleaning thereof. This reduces costs of ownership. Explanations to the movie

The left lens is uncoated, the right lens is coated with GXC NuGlass ETCG (glass). By simply spraying with water it becomes visible, that wettablility of the uncoated lens is better (a film is created) and that on the coated lens repels small droplets. Clean glass is quite hydrophilic in itself and has a contact angle towards water of about 20°. In contrast, the hydrophobic NuGlass ETCG-coating shows a contact angle towards water of significantly more than 110°.

Then the lenses are brushed with a waterbased dirt-suspension (with inorganic and organic components). It is obvious that the NuGlass ETCG coating has a significantly lower wettability and in consequence the coated lens is easier to clean.
